Well it's that time of year again. The holiday season is upon us and overindulgence is just par for the course. If you are like me I'm always looking for ways to feel better, look better and of course turn back the hands of time. I also like to try and get through teh holiday season without gaining weight. I would like to take the time to introduce you to a fellow artist by the name of Maria Ramagli. I have not only had the pleasure of having Maria as my client but as a friend and fellow artist. Maria is definitely a talent to be reckoned with. I admire her emphasis on darkness versus light. There is an ethereal yet provocative quality to her work. There is a precision and a flawlessness even when the look is smokey or smudged which I love! I admire and am inspired by her work. I'm most especially taken with her work with the New York photography genius Preston Cros. Together, Preston and Maria have created one of my favorite tribute pieces to the movie The Black Swan. This piece not only features Maria's makeup work but she is also the one of the subjects. The flawless application of makeup and the portrayal of the internal struggle between "darkness and light" with Preston's lighting is absolute brilliance!

"THE CLARINS EXPERIENCE CONTINUES...."

My skin was still glowing from my facial with Aneta when I signed up for another day of pampering at the Clarins Skin Spa on Madison Ave. I began with a full body exfoliation with the Gommage Exfoliant Peau Neuve that not only exfoliates but softens, smooths and firms. This amazing product is made from bamboo powders and extracts of Mimosa and Shea. The treatment begins with the signature Eau Dynamisante fragrance by Clarins which begins the aromatherapy relaxation experience. This fragrance combines citrus with delicate woody notes to create a relaxing feeling. Then the lovely Aneta once again used her gentle healing touch to exfoliate my entire body using therapeutic hand movements to apply the exfoliant. I was then able to take a warm relaxing shower in the immaculate glass enclosed shower in the quiet treatment room. I used one of my new favorite Clarins products Bain aux Plantes Tonic which is an invigorating shower and bath gel made form essential oils of Rosemary, Mint and Geranium. After my shower I was gently massaged into a trance-like state. Aneta used the Clarins signature lymphatic drainage massage techniques to remove toxins and stimulate my circulation. She used a combination of Huile Tonic body treatment oil, Creme Masvelt Body Shaping Cream and Lift Minceur Haute Definition cellulite control treatment. She custom designed the combination of treatment creams and oils to target my problem areas as well as create a relaxing aromatherapy experience. I have had the pleasure of knowing both Debra and Danielle Joseph's of the Anita Kaufman Foundation which was founded to promote epilepsy awareness. I was thrilled to be the key makeup artist for the Purple Event launched last year during New York Fashion Weeks Fashion Night Out. This year I have had the pleasure of being the key makeup artist for The Purple Cupcake Day ad campaign featuring fashion model Jaime Paetz. Jaime is the face of the Anita Kaufman Foundation who suffers from epilepsy personally. We partnered with the famous New York renown Magnolia Bakery and fashion photographer Anna Thiessen to create a vintage photo shoot for the campaign.

The Purple Cupcake Project will take place March 20-26th. The participating bakeries across the country will donate fifty cents from each cupcake sale to the Anita Kaufaman Foundation.

"THE CLARINS EXPERIENCE!"

I had the pleasure of having one of Clarin's signature facial treatments. I have had many facials over the years at some of the top spas and skin clinics in New York, Miami and Los Angles. I must say I was very impressed. I have very sensitive skin and am always looking for a treatment to soothe my skin and to hydrate my almost always dehydrated skin. This wicked winter has been especially unforgiving for my skin. I have been experiencing dry and flaky areas, redness, irritation and sensitivity. I felt the difference from the moment my therapist, the lovely Aneta touched my face with her gentle healing touch and soothing cleanser. I felt the deep cleansing when she used a suction like technique that felt thorough but not rough or irritating. I was also not irritated by the gentle enzyme exfoliation treatment. I absolutely loved the Clarins signature lymphatic drainage massage. I felt so relaxed I fell asleep for part of it. I also loved that the treatment was not just for the face but included the hands and arms, neck and shoulder massage and even a scalp and foot massage. I also really enjoyed the aromatherapy experience from Clarins signature scents and my plant mask add on. The mask was so cooling and healing. I was almsot sad when she put it on because I knew I was nearing the end of my experience and I wanted to stay another hour. I not only felt that my skin was being treated but I felt a mind and body connection as well. I felt completely balanced, relaxed and soothed after. My skin was smooth, glowing and refreshed. I have continued to see results each day after the treatment and am using the at home routine which Aneta recommended. I'm hooked I definitely be adding this to my monthly skin routine. The weather is calling for yet another snow storm! This winter weather is ravaging to the skin. The dry, cold and windy air can cause extra dry skin, irritation, sensitivity, redness, chapped lips, dehydrated skin and more! If you are having a hard time coping with the weather and the effects it's having on your skin this is for you. I've put together my winter first aid kit for the skin. "TOP TEN WAYS TO BEAT THE WINTER BLUES!"

I don't know about you but this is my least favorite time of year! This snow storm has definitely kicked in the Winter blues. If you are feeling sluggish, depressed and bloated after all the holiday over indulgence now is the perfect time to start a Winter regime. I have put together some of my favorite ways to beat the blues.

1. Cleanse-Now is the perfect time for a cleanse after an indulging in holiday eating. Sugar and carbs can actually cause depression by slowing the body down. This time of year our desire to sleep and eat more is increased which can cause weight gain and lack of motivation. I like to start my Winter regime with a cleanse. 2.90 Day Challenge-The next step after the cleanse is to create a diet plan that includes lots of organic fruits and vegetables, lean protein like organic poultry, fish and tofu and complex. It is especially good to make fresh squeezed vegetable and fruit juices which will boost mood and metabolism. I like to start a 90 day challenge in January so I'm ready for Spring.

3. Vitamin Supplements-This time of year because of the lack of sunlight we can be deficient in Vitamin D which can increase depression. It is important to get plenty of Omega 3 fatty acids as well. It is recommended to take 1000-4000 IU of Vitamin D as well as an Omega 3 supplement and eat plenty of salmon which is naturally high in Omega 3.

4.5HTP- This supplement is a natural amino acid that boosts serotonin which helps with depression.It can also help with insomnia and weight loss. It can be purchased over the counter and has very little side effects.

5.Warm Baths-This is one of my favorite ways to deal with the cold weather. A nice bathe helps with muscle tension and aches and pains brought on by the cold. I love to use natural bath salts from Wholefoods. I love to mix lavender with a little bit of eucalyptus.

6.Light Therapy- The most important way to relieve the blues is to get as much light as possible. The days get shorter and the dark can make us lazy and tired. I have found using a light box really helps. I purchased one from Amazon.com for $89.98 from Nature Bright Sun Touch Plus.

7.Massage-This is another one of my favorite ways to unwind and relax. Massage relieves tension and stress and muscle aches from the cold and helps improve circulation and improves mood. 8.Melatonin-This is another natural supplement that can help regulate sleep cycles which can also help regulate mood and depression. I like to take it at night before bed for a restful sleep.

9.Stay Active+Social- Now is more challenging than ever to not want to just stay inside and isolate. I combat this urge by going to hot yoga. It's a great place to meet people and feel connected. It's also a great way to stay active and to stay warm and cozy.

10. Treat Yourself-I like to treat myself to something special at least once a week like a manicure/pedicure or a Sex in the City day with the girls, or just taking some quality alone time to meditate or listen to music

Now that the holdiay season is approaching I'm obsessed with the new holiday makeup collections and trying new products. This week I'm in love with Nars. The Nars holiday collection is fun and playful and a little bit daring with a bold blue shadow. I also love the new Pure Matte lipstick formula Francois created for Marc Jacobs Spring 2011 show. My other new goto product is the Luminizing Black Mask by Boscia. It's great if you have oily skin and want to tighten, brighten and shrink pores and give the skin a luminous glow before a special occasion. This product is especially great for men. This Fall it's all about luxurious leather handbags and ankle boots. I have picked my top 3 splurges in each category. I'm absolutely in love with the new Louis Vuitton Intrigue calf skin leather bag in rose. It's so classic and chic. I'm usually a big fan of black but I love this bag for a special occasion. My second favorite bag of the season is the Miss Sicily by Dolce and Gabbana. It's a great evening bag since it's smaller and more structured. It's all about animal prints and textures this season so this snakeskin bag is a fabulous way to make a little black dress something special. My third and final pick for the season is the Givenchy Antigona Duffle. This is a great carry all, over sized bag.It's great for a plane trip to Miami for a winter weekend away form the cold. #1 One of my favorite cleansers for male clients is Clean by ZIRH. This is great alpha hydroxy cleanser that works well to deep clean and exfoliate men's skin. It removes dirt and oil without drying the skin. It has a fresh citrus scent. It's also very reasonably priced at $20. My bff swears by it. I like to use it for shoots with male models so they can remove makeup at the end of the day.

#3 The most common issue I encounter with male clients is they don't want to look shiny. I have found a great product from Peter Thomas Roth that works great for men's skin to reduce pore size, absorbs excess oil and perspiration without drying out the skin. #4 One of the most important ways to prevent aging is to make sure the skin is hydrated and moisturized. I find that a lot of men skip this step because of the concern about being shiny. The key is to use a moisturizer that is specifically designed for men. Women tend to need more moisture because they tend to have drier more delicate skin and smaller pores. Men by nature have larger pores and oilier skin especially on the face because of facial hair. I have found a great moisturizers that men love! #5 Another huge concern for male clients is ingrown hairs and breakouts from shaving. A fellow skin male skin therapist swears by the Art of Shaving shaving system. #9 When men come to me for facials they also mention breakout on their back, chest and arms. It's not only important to use a good cleanser on the face but for the body too. Men sweat more than woman and especially when they are weight training testosterone levels are increased which can lead to breakouts on the body. #10 My final product recommendation: hair car by American Crew. I LOVE the Molding Clay and the Pomade. The molding clay is great for short styles. This Fall nails have become one of the greatest accessories. There is a trend for everyone, from classic to rocker chic. I personally love the deep plum colors on short neatly manicured nails, but if you like something different and fun then the reverse french might be for you. This is a fun trend using two colors instead of the classic white tip french. The trend also uses the half moon shape at the nail bed with two different colors.

I always opt for the more classic look so the reverse french is a little too much for me. The other trend that I am loving is the matte nail colors and neutral colors like the Chanel Kaki Collection. The colors remind me of leaves falling in Central Park and are great for a Fall day look.

This fall it's all about the color purple, "purple is the new black" Purple is being seen everywhere from eyes, to lips to dresses to accessories and yes nails too. My two new faves are from Chanel and YSL. The new color Paradoxal is a fun purple metallic that is fun for a day look with skinny jeans, riding boots and a leather jacket. My other favorite color Belle de Nuit by YSL is a beautiful plum that is amazing for evening with a little black dress.

If you love sparkle and fun colors than you'll love the new metallic polishes from Zoya. This is another hot trend for fall. Now I can't talk about nails or Zoya without mentioning the amazing Jackie Saulsbery. Jackie is a celebrity manicurist who works with celebrities like Queen Latifah and her work has been seen in Elle and Bazaar. She is part of the Zoya design team. I'm back! September has been a crazy month with Fashion Week! Stay tuned for pics from designer Bill Blass Spring 2011 look book and sneak peak of Spring 2011 trends from the runway.

Now it's back to Fall although it feels like Summer with all this humidity and rain. I'm looking forward to some real Fall weather so I can wear my new boots and the latest trend for Fall which is berry lips!

When I do strong lip I like to use liner instead of lip stick. It wears longer and I can get a more precise application. I'm in love with Dolce and Gabbana"s lip pencils. The formula is not dry so it glides on almost like a lipstick. I fill in the entire lip and then blend with the brush. I like to seal the pencil by putting a sheer shade over top of the pencil. Giorgio Armani's lip wax is one of my latest "must haves". I use it over a dark pencil to seal the look but it also works great as a lip stain. If you don't want to commit to such a bold lip you can use the lip wax in a deeper shade and then just dab on with your fingers for that bitten look!

FALL MAKEUP TRENDS PART 2

The next trend for Fall is the cat eye with a nude lip. There have been several different takes on the cat eye trend. On the runway we saw a more dramatic smokey version at Bluemarine on supermodel Chanel Iman. We saw a more defined kohl rimmed version at Betsey Johnson and we saw a softer version at Vera Wang.

When working with photographer Anna Thiessen for an editorial spec for Depesha Russia, I decided to go with a more classic liquid liner winged out cat eye for a more dramatic effect with more of a nude pink lip. I use Fluidline in Black Track by Mac Cosmetics with Feline pencil over top for a strong black effect and I used lip erase also my Mac with a dab of Pink Cloud gloss by Bobbi Brown.

I always love a good cat eye. It's sultry and sexy without being to over the top!

There so many makeup trends for Fall. The first one I'm in love with is purple! When I was a kid purple was my favorite color I wanted everything purple. I even wanted my Dad to paint my room purple. So I'm super excited about this trend.

On the runway we saw plum eyes and lips at Dior and lavender on the eyes at Preen and a metallic purple at Carolina Herrera. The question is always how to take the looks from "catwalk to sidewalk'. Some of the looks are a little bold for the everyday women especially some of the bolder plum lips and darker smokey eye looks. The best way to incorporate the trend is use the color but not quite as bold. The look for Dior was a very bold plum lip by makeup genius Pat McGrath. Pat used a very bold deep plum shade by Mac. I like to use Rouge Volupte Perle in Mesmerizing Purple by YSL instead. It is a less pigmented more sheer plum lipstick. When it comes to eyes I love a deep purple smokey eye for evening but a fun day look a soft color wash of soft mauve. I love the new Eyes to Kill Palette by Giorgio Armani that has a shade of mauve and a shade of metallic purple that can be blended for a soft look.

I'm always looking for a way to create glowing, natural looking flawless skin. This week I tried some products from DEX New York. I'm a big fan of an illuminator pen. I like to use it to highlight the key points of the face and to camouflage under eye shadows. I have been loyal to the Touch Eclat pen from YSL forever but lately I have found them to be drying out faster then they used to and the pale shade seems a bit chalky. So, I have been trying new options to replace my old stand by. I have to say the Mineral Illuminator by Dex is fabulous. It goes on smooth and highlights flawlessly and also works great as a light concealer. It comes in 4 shades like Touch Eclat but unlike the YSL option it is infused with a mineral complex and is a bargain priced at $28 instead of $42. Now I can buy 2 of each for a little more than the price of only 4 from YSL. I also fell in love with Mineral Glow. I'm usually not a fan of mineral products. I find them to be heavy, caky or too powdery. The Mineral Glow is amazing. I used it as an all over primer for the skin and mixed it with several of my liquid foundations. It gives the skin a nice glowing finish without being to sparkly. Dex calls it "liquid light". He is right!

I have also been looking for cosmetic products that not only do the trick but are good for the skin. This contains a mineral complex packed with anti-oxidant vitamins like A and E. I'm excited to try some of Dex's mineral foundations. Stay tuned for my next makeup adventure!

MY BEAUTY PICKS OF THE WEEK!

My new favorite spot to is the Sephora in the Time Warner building. When it's 100 degrees outside like it's been the past week it's nice and cool and relaxed at Sephora. It's not packed and messy like some others in the city. The staff is also friendly and helpful but not pushy and aggressive. I stayed for almost 3 hours playing with all kinds of goodies and I wasn't bothered or bombarded by sales people trying to spay me with perfume like at the department store.

I found some great new beauty picks for the week some bargains and some splurges. The first one is definitely a splurge priced at $60 for a foundation but I fell in love with AirFlash Foundation by Dior. It really does gives amazing coverage without looking heavy. I especially liked it on my legs. I had a small bruise from bumping into my credenza and it went on like liquid stockings. I used a sponge when I applied it to my face but sprayed it directly on my legs and then buffed it out a little with the sponge.

The next find is definitely a bargain. The Makeup Forever HD Complexion Travel Kit for only $29 is the bargain of the week. I have been using loose Blot Powder by Mac forever as my goto powder for shine and I've recently been in love with Nars Primer but the HD Micorfinish Powder by Makeup Forever tops both! This powder is truly AMAZING! It was especially created for High Definition cameras (which can see 6x sharper than the human eye making imperfections almost magnified) but works great in real life too. I have very sensitive dry skin but get very shiny in the summer. I'm always looking for something that will take away shine without looking heavy and let my skin breath and show through. I'm also always looking for something for photo shoots and my private clients like brides to keep makeup in place and look good on camera. I'm sorry to say although it's been a long romance with Mac Blot Powder but this week I'm getting a divorce. I used the HD Microfinish Pwder for myself as well as for a shoot and it's amazing. It's talc free and made wih mineral silica which is absorbent but doesn't dry the skin like talc. It gives the skin a smooth airbrushed quality while keeping the radiance. The real bargain is that the HD Complexion Kit not only comes with the powder(priced at $30 on it's own) but with the primer and the serum. The serum is like nothing I've used before. It actually boosts the moisture levels of the skin by 520% in fifteen minutes. The serum combined with the primer helps foundation to glide on like silk and can be used alone with the powder for a smooth glowing complexion but without the greasy shine!

My final pick of the week is Illumifill Line Filling Lumizer from Fusion Beauty priced at $49. This product claims to improve the appearance of fine lines in 28 days. I don't know if I buy that but what it does do is give an instant tightening effect around the eyes and took away my dark circles from staying up late the night before and made a great base for concealer. Is it worth the $49 I'll have to let you know in 28 days.

Anyone who knows me knows I'm obsessed with the concept of eternal youth. I certainly haven't found a magic fountain yet but I have found some amazing options to stay looking young without having to go under the knife. My philosophy is all about prevention vs. surgery. I have been getting skin treatments done for over 10 years. I started noticing changes in my skin around 25. I was still going in the sun and I was a smoker. I started with microdermabrasion, ligth chemical peels and Smoothbeam laser which has kept my skin in great shape. I don't have any wrinkles or lines and my skin in still tight. However, I have noticed lately some hyper-pigmentaion starting to show and I have several broken capillaries around my nose and some veins showing around my eyes.I have been researching my options and have found some more advanced laser options.

The first option is the IPL Photo Facial. The IPL stands for intense pulsed light. It is non-ablative, meaning that it does not damage the surface of the skin. The are several types of IPL. The PhotoDerm VL tragets vascular lesions such as spider veins and birthmarks and the PhotoDerm PL is for melasma and dark spots. The third kind of IPL is used for hair removal. The treatments take about 30-45 minutes and there is next to no downtime. There are some disadvantages. There can be some redness and brown spots will come to the surface and get darker first and peel for 7 to 14 days. The cost of each treatment can range from $300-$600 depending on the area. The photo facial can treat redness, acne, hyperpigmentation, facial veins, fine lines and wrinkles and even rosacea. The IPL is great for most skin types however very dark or very tanned complexions can not use IPL. It is also important to remember depending on how much damage there is to the skin will determine the number of treatments needed. It is also important to be very careful with sun exposure after IPL treatments. I plan to do several treatments in the Fall and Winter.

"WHAT'S NEW IN MAKEUP PART 2"

I have a new mascara I'm obsessed with! I have to say it's even better than Dior Show! The new Hyperlash from Smashbox creates fierce lashes! I love the 2 in 1 applicator with a brush and a comb. I use the brush to apply and thicken the lashes and then use the comb to separate and define. I especially love it when I apply individual false lashes. It makes is so easy to blend the false and the real lashes together for a dramatic look without looking fake or clumpy. The only downside is that it only comes in black. I'm a big fan of chocolate brown to make blue eyes pop.

Another one of my new favorites by Nars is the Pro-Prime Face Prep. Now that it feels like 1000 degrees outside the las thing I want to do is put on makeup only for it to melt off in the subway. What's a girl to do? I recommend keeping it simple. I just put on the Pro-Prime and some bronzer and some tinted lip conditioner and some Hyperlash and go! This new product gives a nice matte finish to the skin and smooths out pores and fine lines. It's doesn't feel heavy and it can be reapplied throughout the day. It's sheer and colorless and works on all skin types and skin tones.

So, speaking of bronzer and tinted lip conditioner. I've been wearing Uruku Bronzer from Aveda and using their Nourish Mint Sheer Mineral Lip Color. My skin has been acting sensitive from the heat and my other favorite gel or cream bronzing products are just no match for July in NYC. I was at the Time Warner Center cooling off and browsing when I decided to stop at The Aveda Store. The Uruku Bronzer is a nice light natural bronzing duo and it's made with vitamin E which has healed my skin"s irritation. While I was there I decided to get a lip conditioner too because my lips have been dry and I haven't felt like wearing my favorite glosses and lipsticks in the heat. The Nourish Mint did the trick. It's made with natural spearmint and vanilla and not only moisturizes but it tastes good and has plumping action. I really like Sheer Clover it's a nice soft pink.

I'm in love with a bunch of new goodies from some of my favorite makeup companies, Giorgio Armani, Nars and Smashbox.
I'm obsessed with Face Fabric Radiance.It's the lastes version of Face Fabric Foundation from Giorgio Armani which won The Cosmetic Executive Women Product Prestige Award for 2009. It's the most amazing cream to powder formulation I've tried. It's so light and sheer, and gives the skin a soft radiant glow that looks so natural. It's come in 3 shades light to medium dark. My other favorite product that I love to pair with it is Blushing Fabric. This blush is sheer and gives a nice pop of color for a nice natural look. It also comes in 3 shades ranging from a soft pink to a bolder more coral shade.

My next set of" must have" new products are from Nars. The latest version of the "cult favorite" blush Orgasm is a "liquid orgasm"! The Orgasm Illuminator is a sheer fluid that can be used alone or all over the face for natural glow.It can also be mixed with foundation, or used as a highlighter on the cheekbones. My other new favorite from Nars is The Multiple Tint. This is a great all in one NYC gal on the go "must have". The tints can be used on lips cheeks and I even use them on the eyes. They are bright fun Summer colors like pink and fuchsia and orange. They are bold colors, but go on sheer for quick on the go day look.

Today is the perfect day to talk about the rest of my favorite sunless tanning products. It's 100 degrees outside, I can barely walk to the corner to get an ice cream cone let alone thinking about going to the beach. Why go to the beach when you can "look" like you did without all the fuss. That's why I love Stila Sun Gel. It's a lightweight gel that can be applied over moisturizer or a light foundation for a nice natural glow. If you like a little "bling" then you'll love Stila Bronzing Tinted Moisturizer with SPF 15. It's Summer and everyone wants that "healthy" glow but it's important to remember that long term sun exposure isn't really healthy Let's face it the healthiest tan is always a fake tan. I am especially fond of "faking" it since I'm fair and burn easily and I'm obsessed with not having wrinkles. I've found some great products and tricks to look bronzed and glowing for summer.

I have tried all the self-tanning products from the drugstore brands to the most expensive department store brands. I haven't had any luck not looking orange and streaky. I have opted for a "little goes a long way". I use an organic SPF 40 when I'm walking around the city or sitting outside at an outdoor cafe so I'm protected but still get a small amount of nice natural color. Then when I go out for the evening I use my favorite makeup products to enhance the color and create a nice golden look.

One of my favorite products is Mac Face and Body. I use it for photo shoots and backstage at Fashion Week. It can always go from "catwalk to sidewalk". I choose a shade 1 to 2 shades darker than my natural color. I apply it on my face and blend down my neck and then blend into any areas where is showing. It's great because it feels light and is water-based and water resistant so it stays put.

Another one of my favorite products is Nars Body Glow. If I'm not in the mood for Face and Body and just want a quick out the door fix then Nars Body Glow is the answer. It smells amazing made with Tahitian Vanilla and give a nice golden glow. It's amazing on collarbones with a strapless dress.

Now that you know what do about cellulite, unwanted hair and what the trends are for Summer it's time to talk about sunscreen. There has been a lot of buzz about "total sun block" and SPF as high as 100. The question is "What does all this mean?"

First of all, it's important to know the difference between sun block and sunscreen. A sunscreen absorbs ultraviolet light so that it doesn't reach your skin. A sun block physically blocks the sun with ingredients like titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. Both a sunscreen and a sun block protect your skin from the sun but neither block the sun's ray 100 percent. The next important thing to know about sunscreen is the SPF. The term SPF refers to the ability of the sunscreen to block UVB rays which causes sunburn but does not protect the skin form UVA rays. According to Florida dermatologist and American Academy of Dermatology spokesman James M. Spencer the truth about sunscreens higher than 45 is they are just silly. The truth is that a sunscreens with an SPF of 45 blocks about 98 percent of UVB rays and that a sunscreen higher than 45 is unnecessary. However, with skin cancer on the rise, especially among young people, it is important to wear sunscreen and to follow the ABC's of sun protection:

A is for Avoid the most dangerous hours of the day between 10 and 4
B is for Block by wearing hats, sunglasses and an SPF of 30 t0 45
C is for Cover which refers to the amount of sunblock that should be applied(about a shot glass size for adults)

The most common mistakes people make is not reapplying sunscreen and choosing a sunscreen that is high in dangerous chemicals. There are new studies that now show the danger of certain chemicals in sunscreens such as oxybenzone. The British Medical Journal recently showed that

there is a possible link between this chemical and malignant skin cancer.

So remember to protect yourself this summer. Choose the right SPF, reapply especially when swimming or playing sports and be sure to choose a chemical free sunscreen.

The first day of Summer is here! This means it's time to show some skin and get rid of your unwanted hair. The question is "What's the best way to remove unwanted hair?" The most permanent way to remove hair is electrolysis. The next most permanent option is laser hair removal. If you are not ready to commit to the electrolysis or laser process then pain-free waxing is another excellent option. If you are considering any hair removal option it is important to know all the information so you can choose the best method is right for you.

If it sounds to good to be true; chances are it is! So be on the look out for "gimmicky" sales promotions. The best way to know what you are putting on your skin is to first be an educated consumer. The question is "What ingredients should I be looking for?" and "How do I know how to read the labels?"

First it is important to know that the FDA passed a law in 1966 regulating the packaging of cosmetic and skin care products. The name, address and net quantity and list of ingredients must be listed on the package. The FDA made an amendment to this law by requiring the ingredients to be listed in order from highest to lowest concentration. "What does this mean for the consumer?" If you are purchasing any product that claims it is made with high concentrations of any ingredient or claims to be medical grade, first you want to see where the ingredient is listed in the list of ingredients.

Second, you want to know what ingredients to look for when shopping for products. Here is the "Top Ten" List of ingredients to be on the look out for which can create negative side effects and can also be toxic:

1. Diazolidinyl Urea- These are usually used as preservatives. They are the second most commonly used after "parabens". They can cause contact dermatitis which is characterized by a rash. They can also be listed as Germall I. They can release formaldehyde and can be toxic.

2. Methy, Propyl and Ethyl Paraben- These are the most common preservatives. They can cause allergic reactions and skin rashes. Be on the look out for "paraben-free" formulas that are now being offered.

3. Petrolatum- This ingredient is extremely cheap and is most likely used in lip therapy products, lip sticks and glosses. Ironically enough the products that are claiming to soothe and protect lips that contain petrolatum actually do the opposite. It actually causes photo sensitivity and dries out the skin and interferes with the body's natural moisturizing mechanism. So next time you buy a "lip conditioner" be sure to look for this ingredient.

4. Propylene Glycol- This is petrochemical which can cause allergic and toxic reactions.

5. PVP/PVA Copolymer- Can cause lung sensitivity.

6. Sodium Laurel Sulfate- This a synthetic substance used in shampoos and hair care products that can cause eye irritations, hair loss and dandruff.

7. Synthetic Colors- They will be labeled as FD&C or D&C. These synthetic colors can be cancer causing.

8. Steralkonium Chloride- This ingredient was originally formulated as a fabric softener but is cheap to use and can be used as a conditioner. This can cause major skin irritation.

9. Synthetic Fragrances- The synthetic fragrances can have as many as 200 ingredients and can cause anything from headaches, hyperpigmentation, rashes, and skin irritation.

10. Triethanolamine- This ingredient is often used in cleansers and can actually dry out skin and hair and cause eye problems.

It is not only important to know what ingredients are not beneficial to the skin but it is also important to know what ingredients to look for that can actually improve the health of the skin. The truth about most over the counter "Fountain of Youth" creams is they just can't produce the same results as a medical grade product. Most products you can purchase at a department store counter or at your local Duane Reade don't have a high enough concentration of the the ingredients that can actually give the results they claim. The FDA requires that all cosmetic and skin care products list all of their ingredients in order from the highest to lowest in concentration. Most of the ingredients that are actually active in the product are in the first five ingredients and the ingredients they boast about being the "wrinkle cure" are at the bottom of the ingredient list. The most effective ingredients that can actually treat the skin discoloration caused by sun damage, fine lines, wrinkles and even deeper wrinkles known as fissures which come with age are AHA, BHA and TCA acids. The AHAs are known as alphahydroxy acids which include glycolic and lactic acids. These acids help unclog pores, help with deep exfoliation and cell renewal as well as hydrate the skin, promote collagen production and improve tone and texture. The BHAs are known as betahydroxy acids, also known as salicylic acid which are much gentler than glycolic acids and are excellent for people with sensitive skin and acne who are looking for the same results as glycolic acids but are more sensitive to their effects. The TCAs are known as trichloracetic acid which is a more which can be used as a deeper peel and are particulary good for darker skins and skins with more damage and need more intensive results. In order to actually penetrate the deeper layer of the skin know as the dermis, where collagen and elastin production happens, the concentration of these acids needs to be high enough. In addition to over the counter products not having high enough concentrations of the active ingredients the products have lots of other filler ingredients which can actually irritate and dry the skin when used on a regular basis. The other downside is that most products are pricey and use a marketing trick known as "puffery"which is packaging products in a larger package but the actual amount of product is not as large as the package.

The question is " So how can I get optimum results without spending so much money?" The best way to get results is to get a medical grade peel done by a licensed professional several times a year at a reasonable price for optimum results. As well as follow up with a treatment program at home that is specifically designed for your skin.

A very Nouveau Riche concept of "more is more" was the inspiration for the couture shows in Paris. The look is very Hollywood glam from Bardot to Barbarella. Tom Pecheux (who is one of the most sought after makeup artists in the industry and one of my true inspirations) created a dramatic smokey eye paired with either a nude lip or for a very sultry look he used crimson on the lips for the Jean Paul Gaultier show. Pat Mc Grath (who has been named one of the most influential make up artists by Vogue magazine) went for a more bold fifties inspired look for the Dior show. She created dramatically arched brows and exaggerated liquid liner with bold bright lips in shades of red and fuchsia.

So the question is: How do I take these dramatic runway looks from catwalk to sidewalk?

A great way to stay current and follow the trend is to pick one element of the runway look and focus on either eyes, lips or brows.

Here I chose to focus on Morgan's lips for a soft yet bold glamorous look. I started with flawless skin by using Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation. Some other helpful tricks to use when creating a bold red lip in addition to choosing the right red lipstick are smooth lips, long lasting color and a precision application.

I like to use both a lip exfoliant and a lip primer from Smashbox Cosmetics www.Smashbox.com. The exfoliant is an emulsion of sugar granules as well as lip conditioners like Shea butter which gently exfoliates and conditions lips at the same time. The primer helps to keep lips from feathering and keeps the color in place longer. The primer is definitely a "must have"! It's not only a lip primer but a 2 in one product. The look for Spring 2010 is soft and feminine. The skin is clean and luminous. Cheek color is used more to sculpt the face rather than as cheek color. The tones are soft neutral beige and pink. Lips are matte neutral pale tones. Eyes are also soft neutral shades of browns, beige, gold tones with some shimmer and some matte finishes.

It will be Thursday September 10, 2009 at the Sony Atrium when The Purple Event kicks off New York Fashion Week. The Purple Event is a fashion event to benefit the Anita Kaufman Foundation. The Purple Event is hosted by Jillian Harris of The Bachelorette with special guests Elliot Yamin of American Idol, Anna Ortiz of Ugly Betty, Alex McCord of The Housewives of New York City, Alan Faneca of the New York Jets and his wife Julie. The event will include a silent auction and runway show featuring purple looks from over sixty designers from Max Mara, Nicole Miller, Nanette Lapore, Eli Tahari, Michael Kors and Project Runway's winner Leanne Marshall just to name a few.
